PARTS OF AN AIRPLANE

The body of an aircraft is called fuselage. It is of a long tube shape. The wheels of a plane are termed the landing gear. There are two main wheels on either side of the plane fuselage. Then there is one more wheel near the front of the plane. The brakes for the wheels are like the brakes for cars. They are operated by pedals, one for each wheel. Most landing gear can be folded into the fuselage during the flight and opened for landing to keep the drag minimum during flight/cruise.

 

All planes have wings and they are shaped with smooth surfaces. There is a curve to the wing which helps push the air over the top more quickly than it goes under the wing. As the wing moves, the air flowing over top of wing has longer distance to go and it moves faster than the air underneath the wing. This creates low air pressure above the wing far less than below it. This gives upward lift. The shape of the wings makes an airplane fast or slow.

The control surfaces which are hinged are used to steer and control airplane. The flaps and ailerons are connected to backside of wings. The flaps can be slided back and down to increase the surface of the wing area. They can also be tiltes down to increase curve of the wing. The slats can be moved out from the front of the wings to make wing space larger. This increases the lift of wing at slower speeds like takeoff and landing. The ailerons are on the wings hinged to them and move downward for pushing the air down and tilting the wing up. This action helps in moving the plane to side and turn during a flight.  Once landed, the spoilers are normally used like brakes to reduce the remaining life and slowing down of the aircraft.

Stability is provided to the plane by the tail at the rear. Vertical part of the tail is fin. Rudder at back of plane can be moved left and right thereby enabling control of the left or right movement of the plane. The elevators are found at the rear of the plane. Planes nose direction is changed with the help of elevators.  The plane movement up or down also can be controlled with elevators.
